Long-term biofuels policy for India seen soon

A long-term biofuels policy, which is under consideration by the Indian government, is expected to be in place in the next six months, said S.K. Chopra, special secretary, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. The policy would focus on the development of the biofuels sector and fiscal and financial incentives. Chopra said the issue of energy security was important in relation to the fast-growing economy and for sustaining economic growth. The Indian biodiesel program, which is based on jatropha and other non-edible feedstock, is not likely to lead to any conflict in the nature of `Food versus Fuel’ debate as seen in other countries, he added.
