Lebanon’s public sector to receive fuel subsidy

A recent deal negotiated between transport unions and Lebanon’s Finance Ministry is generating widespread criticism. Under the deal, the public transport sector would receive fuel subsidies to limit the impact of rising fuel prices. Each public taxi driver would receive 40 liters of gasoline at the price of LL50,000 (US$33.05) per day. Approximately 37,000 to 40,000 licensed taxi cabs would qualify for the subsidy, in addition to an unknown number of unlicensed cabs.  (May 21, 2011)
