Japan’s Showa Shell builds biomass plant
On a former refinery plot, a next-generation thermal power plant will be constructed to provide 300,000-megawatt hours of power.
Showa Shell Sekiyu announced that it will build a 49 MW thermal power plant fuelled by wood biomass at Ohgimachi plant at the Keihin refinery in Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan.
This decision shows the company’s expansion plans which aims at increasing the scale and sources of power generation in the electric power business as it also shows the company’s commitment to deliver renewable energy to match the country’s needs. This project parallels Showa Shell Sekiyu’s oil and solar business strategy that will result in the company’s power generation portfolio.
To increase the project’s logistical benefits it is close to a major urban area, providing it with infrastructural advantages and also in a coastal location, which gives ships easier access to it. It is scheduled for completion by December 2015.
