Japan considers “environmental” vehicle tax

The Japanese government is considering changing the current vehicle tax structure in the country from fiscal year 2011-2012, reports Asia Pulse. A Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications study group has released a report containing a proposal to combine the prefectural vehicle tax and the national vehicle weight tax to create a single “environmental” vehicle tax. This new vehicle tax would be paid to prefectures and would include a fee based on a vehicle’s exhaust and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. (September 16, 2010)
