India may mandate annual vehicle check-ups

India’s Department of Transport and Highways said it may mandate vehicle check-ups at least once a year. The department also revealed plans to set up a series of standardized centers across the country which would have the physical and technical infrastructure to do so. The proposed standards for the checks will be at par with the emissions standards, etc. of European countries, officials said and added that the idea for the annual checks was due to an increasing consciousness of the link between pollution, fuel efficiency and the health of the engine. The transport department is trying to identify and tie up with qualified garages across the country where the check-up centers can be set up, especially as they will require equipment as well as the manpower to be able to make the necessary repairs. Currently, tailpipe emission checks are being administered through mobile units at different petrol stations. (May 24, 2009)
