Illegal smuggling of fuel continues from Vietnam to Cambodia

The Steering Committee on Fighting Smuggling in Vietnam has issued a report that large volumes of diesel fuel and gasoline are continuing to be illegally smuggled from Vietnam into Cambodia as small traders make money on the big price differential between the countries. According to the report, traffickers are smuggling the fuel through the frontier areas of Tinh Bien Town, An Khanh Village and Long Binh Village. Smuggling is expected to continue , as the price of gasoline in Vietnam is only VND19,300 (US$0.93) per liter, compared to Cambodia’s VND24,000 (US$1.15) per liter. Traffickers are using motorboats to transport fuels across the border. (March 8, 2011)
