Hyundai targets 50 MPG fleet average

Korean automaker Hyundai Motor Co. aims to have a U.S. vehicle line-up that averages 50 miles per gallon (MPG) by 2025, the company’s U.S. Chief Executive John Krafcik said. Krafcik also said the goal is a stretch and the company has yet to determine how to reach it, but he believes it is feasible. U.S. regulations require automakers to achieve a Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards rating of 35.5 miles per gallon by 2016. Hyundai’s current fleet of cars and light trucks average 30.9 miles per gallon. Krafcik said the 50 MPG target will help drive the company’s engineering, research and development ranks to improve fuel efficiency. (August 4, 2010)
