Hybrid loader lightens load on environment

Kawasaki Heavy Industries plans to break into the hybrid construction machinery market, following the development of what is believed to be the world’s first hybrid wheel loader. The hybrid, which was developed by subsidiary KCM Corp., converts excess energy from the engine into electricity while the machine is stationary and stores it for use as supplementary power when in action. The hybrid wheel loader will likely cost around 20 million yen (US$222,790.38), double the price of conventional equipment, but KCM aims to lower the price through economies of scale. The company intends to start taking orders for the loader in 2010, with an initial goal of selling 10 units a year. (December 28, 2009)
