Honda introduces two-motor hybrid system
Honda Motor Co. unveiled a key feature of its low-emissions “Earth Dreams Technology.” The new two-motor hybrid system will be used in Honda’s plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHV) beginning in 2012. The new system is designed to maximize fuel efficiency and overall performance. Honda said that the new system involves using the electric motor at start-up and low speed. The “hybrid mode” will kick in during acceleration when both the gasoline and electric motors will operate, and at high speeds, the gasoline engine will take over. Aside from the new two-motor system, the Japanese car maker said it will introduce a system that is based on two independent motors that will drive the rear wheels aside from a main, engine-helper motor. Honda also rolled out an electric two-wheeled model named the “Uni-Cub.” The chair-like vehicle has a balance system that was developed for the bipedal robot Asimo. It is driven using handles, a feature that makes it safe for both children and seniors. (December 8, 2011)
