HK regulations pull plug on micro-electric car
An electric vehicle developed by Hong Kong-based EuAuto Technology Ltd. cannot be registered as a passenger car in its city of origin as it fails to meet local standards. The two-seater, battery-driven MyCar failed to meet existing requirements in Hong Kong on structure, seatbelt design and crash test results, as it is not a conventional car but a “micro-car”—an uncommonly small vehicle. However, it will be exported to Europe this year, as Europe recognizes micro-cars as a special category of vehicles. The company plans to negotiate with the government for special licenses to be issued for the car in various locations in Hong Kong. (March 3, 2009)
