General Motors to produce new van in Indonesia

U.S.-based General Motors Co. will manufacture a new seven-seater “people mover” van in Indonesia. The company will construct a new plant in Jakarta to produce approximately 50,000 vans per year, according to an industry source. The move to make vehicles in Indonesia is part of GM’s strategy to expand its presence in the country and provide a logical distribution center for the export of its vehicles to other emerging countries. Car sales have slowed in the U.S. and European markets, prompting U.S. automotive companies to seek sales in new markets. (August 11, 2011)
