General Motors opens advanced research and technical center in China

General Motors said it will boost its engineering expertise in the manufacture of new-energy vehicles in China. GM wants to capitalize on the growing demand for new energy vehicles and at the same time, the company wants to position itself against Toyota and Volkswagen. In line with this, GM opened the first phase of the China Advanced Technical Center (ATC) in Shanghai in late September 2011. The facility will play an important role in GM’s research and development of advanced technologies. The focus of ATC’s research will be on the development of lightweight materials and battery shells for hybrid and electric cars. China is now on the top of the list in GM’s global strategy. The company recently signed an agreement with its long-time Chinese partner, SAIC Motor, for the development of a new generation of electric cars in China. (September 22, 2011)
