Fuel excise tax contribute A$9.1 billion to Australia’s coffers

Trucking operators have played a big role in filling government coffers, with a new report on road funding showing that the fuel excise made up 56% of taxes and charges, Brad Gardner wrote in Australian Transport News. Figures released by Australia’s Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics (BITRE) show that the federal government collected A$16.2 billion (US$14.68 billion) in revenues in 2006-07, with the fuel excise contributing A$9.1 billion (US$8.25 billion).
