FedEx launches eco-driving program in Asia

FedEx Express, an operating company of FedEx Corp., and the world’s largest express transportation company, has launched an “eco-drive” campaign in 10 Asia-Pacific countries to improve fuel efficiency. The program will be run in Australia, China, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand. Started in Japan, the program will teach FedEx drivers how to operate in a more environmentally friendly way through both classroom and practical sessions. Taught by experts from Isuzu, the program is expected to result in improved fuel efficiency of FedEx vehicle fleets, which in turn will lead to lower vehicle emissions. “The Eco-drive programme demonstrates that it’s not just where and what FedEx team members are driving that can make a big difference in reducing fuel use, but also how they are driving,” said David L. Cunningham Jr., president of FedEx Express, Asia Pacific. FedEx said it is also shifting to more fuel efficient vehicles and aircraft through increased investment in all-electric and alternative drive train vehicles and adding 777F aircraft to its fleet. FedEx Express is adding almost 4,000 vehicles that are at least 100% more fuel efficient than the most commonly found alternatives they replace. Last year, the company increased its all-electric and hybrid-electric vehicle fleet by 20%, with more than 400 vehicles in service across the globe. (March 14, 2012)
