Dow Chemical to produce ethanol from algae

Dow Chemical Co. and Algenol Biofuels Inc. said that they will band together to produce ethanol from algae and carbon dioxide. The two companies’ pilot-scale project, done in cooperation with U.S.-based National Renewable Energy Laboratory and the Georgia Institute of Technology and Membrane Technology & Research Inc., is planned to be located at Dow’s facility in Freeport, Texas. The project will use Algenol’s technique of using photobioreactors with carbon dioxide and saltwater-raised algae to make ethanol. (June 29, 2009)
