DHL introduces carbon neutral shipping
DHL International GmbH, the world’s leading express and logistics company, has announced the launch of its carbon neutral shipping service DHL GoGreen Express in Sri Lanka. The service, the company said, is aimed at managing DHL and its customers’ environmental footprint. The service entails an additional 2% “green premium” on top of standard delivery charges. DHL calculates the carbon emissions generated by transporting each specific customer shipment from the country of origin to destination, then offsets the emissions by reinvesting in certified carbon management programs such as alternative fuel vehicle technology, solar panels and reforestation projects. To ensure accountability and transparency, the program will be annually verified by an independent certifying body, the Swiss-based Societe Generale de Surveillance. With the program DHLhas become the first and only freight forwarder to achieve full umbrella certification for Environment Management System ISO14001: 2004 in Asia Pacific. (March 31, 2009)
