Construction of Indonesia's US$4 billion Kalibaru port starts

State-owned Indonesian Port Corporation (IPC), or Pelindo II, said it had officially started the construction of the US$4 billion Kalibaru Port, or New Priok, in North Jakarta. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono oversaw the groundbreaking ceremonies.
The first phase of the project, which required an investment of US$2.3 billion, encompasses construction of three container terminals with a capacity of 4.5 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) and two gasoline terminals with a capacity of 9.4 million cu m (332m cu ft). The facilities are expected to become operational in 2014.
Once completed, Kalibaru Port will have a total capacity of 13 million TEU and will be managed by PT Pengembang Pelabuhan Indonesia (PPI), part of Pelindo II. The new port will be the country’s largest industrial port.
Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo said the city will mediate a land dispute between Pelindo and local residents who are protesting the building of an access road that would cut through a sacred graveyard.
