China wants to lead the world in creating a green vehicle industry

China wants to lead the world in creating a green vehicle industry, but respected motor industry figures say it will be a long and arduous task. Wan Gang, the minister of Science and Technology, suggests car makers get together to develop the core technologies necessary for green cars. Shenzhen-based BYD has suggested that the government subsidize one-third of the customer cost of hybrid vehicles, which are expected to sell for about 150,000 yuan (US$21,927.87). After marathon discussions among government departments, Beijing will announce a subsidy plan for environmentally friendly vehicles in March 2010. (January 1, 2010)
