Caterpillar to pay US$2.55 million for Clean Air Act violation
Peoria, Ill., U.S.A.-based Caterpillar Inc. is expected to pay US$2.55 million as part of a civil penalty for shipping more than 590,000 highway and non-road engines which were in violation of current emissions standards and the U.S. Clean Air Act. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Justice Department said the company also failed to comply with emission control reporting and engine labeling. Ignacia S. Moreno, Assistant Attorney General for the Environment and Natural Resources Division of the Department of Justice said, “This settlement demonstrates our commitment to enforcing the Clean Air Act’s requirement that engine manufacturers take steps to ensure engines are equipped with emissions controls that are essential to protecting public health from harmful air pollution.” (July 28, 2011)
