Biodiesel firm to produce enzymes for bakeries

VAN der Horst Energy (VDHE), a Singapore biodiesel firm, yesterday moved into the biotech sector with the signing of a joint venture to produce and market enzymes for the flour and bakery industry. The agreement was inked between VDHE’s subsidiary Shenyang China Starzyme Company (Starzyme) and Italian baking ingredients supplier Millbo. One of Millbo’s specialities is producing enzymes used in baking – for instance those that make bread soft or those with anti-mould properties. Currently, Starzyme’s enzymes can be used in anything from animal feed, bread and noodles to beer fermentation, biofuels and paper manufacturing. Increasing concerns about food safety and environmental protection mean there is higher demand for enzymes, which are natural substitutes for some harmful chemicals used in food and animal feed production. Lee Peng Soon, Starzyme’s deputy general manager, said: ‘The policies that the Chinese government is putting down on food safety are very, very strict. When asked about plans for further international expansion, Lee said that there are challenges in registering food and agriculture products in different countries. VDHE’s Cheng said that there are plans to build five enzyme-blending plants within a year, and to seal more acquisitions and joint ventures. (June 30, 2009)
