Austria's BDI signs EUR20 million biodiesel plant deal with Croatia's Biom

Austrian waste-to-energy project developer BioEnergy International (BDI) announced on October 7, that it has signed a deal with Croatia’s Biom worth EUR20 million (USD27.6 million) for the construction of a multi-feedstock biodiesel plant in Croatia.
The total capacity of the plant will be approximately 100,000 tons annually, while the first high-quality biodiesel should be produced by the end of 2014, BDI said in a press release. Vesna Trnokop-Tanta of the Croatian Chamber of Commerce said this is an important step for Croatia in meeting the EU’s demands regarding the renewable energy directive (RED).
The technology will enable Biom to convert many different waste and residual materials into high-quality biodiesel, materials that would otherwise be discarded. BDI Board Member Edgar Ahn said, “[I]t does not only make an important contribution to environmental protection in the area of transport, but also helps to safely dispose problematic waste streams or even convert them into useful substances.”
BDI’s business is the construction of customized biodiesel plants using proprietary technology that makes possible the production of biodiesel from different raw materials, such as vegetable oils, used cooking oils and animal fats.
