Allison inaugurates Indian transmission plant
Allison Transmission Inc. (AT), a division of General Motors Corp. (GM) and supplier of commercial-duty, fully automatic transmissions, broke ground on the first manufacturing facility in Oragadam, India, in January 29, which is expected to be operational by 2010. “The Chennai plant will be spread across 203,000 square feet at SIPCOT Industrial Park in Oragadam and will manufacture various auto-components once it becomes operational,” AT Managing Director Ram S. Amarnath said. The facility would cater to the commercial vehicle segment, and is set to initially serve the domestic market. It would also export products to European countries in the future. Currently, Allison imports products from its manufacturing plant in Hungary to supply its Indian customers. (January 29, 2009)
