Accelergy and Yankuang Group form CTL joint venture
A large-scale, low-carbon hybrid coal-to-liquids (CTL) plant will soon rise in Erdos, in China’s Inner Mongolia Province. The plant will be a joint venture between Accelergy Corporation and the Yankuang Group. When completed, the plant will use a hybrid configuration of the Micro-catalytic Coal Liquefaction (MCL) system of Accelergy, and the proprietary Fischer Tropsch indirect liquefaction system of Yankuang. The plant will also use Accelergy’s TerraSync® terrestrial sequestration system
JV to bring next-generation coal-to-liquids plants online in China
Accelergy Corporation is based in Houston, Texas, and is a global leader, recognized for its expertise in the production of clean, high-grade synthetic liquid fuels while promoting energy security through the use of domestic resources. Accelergy has a suite of catalytic synthetic fuels technologies which significantly increases the efficiency of the conversion processes, and their TerraSync® sequestration technology greatly reduces greenhouse gas emissions.
The Yankuang Group, which will be heading the joint venture’s feasibility study, is one of China’s largest coal companies. It is active in various sectors but its coal operations are focused mainly on production, sales and coal-to-chemicals. It has a subsidiary company, Yanzhou Coal Mining Company Limited, which is listed in the New York Stock Exchange, Hong Kong Stock Exchange and Shanghai Stock Exchange.
Timothy Vail, CEO of Accelergy, said, “As China’s economy continues to grow, so does the demand for high quality synthetic fuels needed to power its fleets. Our partnership with Yankuang will provide domestically sourced fuels with a low carbon footprint to meet this market need. He added, “Accelergy’s technologies, combined with Yankuang’s execution skills, bring next-generation coal-to-liquids plants online in China.” The CTL plant will be Accelergy’s first commercial CTL facility in China and will produce a mixture of distillate fuels that will include gasoline, diesel fuel and jet fuel. The company is already operating a pilot facility at the Beijing Research Institute for Coal Chemistry (BRICC), where it has begun fuel production.
China is currently the world’s largest producer and consumer of coal. According to a recent report on the current CTL market, the country’s CTL output is expected to increase from 1.5 million tons in 2010 to 30 million tons in 2020. (October 15, 2011)
