HPCL and Gogoro initiate battery swapping network in India
Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (HPCL), a leading Indian oil company, has joined forces with Gogoro Inc., a global pioneer in battery swapping ecosystems, to introduce a network of battery swapping stations across India. This partnership, formalised through a memorandum of understanding (MoU), is set to deploy Gogoro’s battery swapping stations at thousands of HPCL’s retail gas outlets in the forthcoming years.
The collaboration is a strategic response to India’s burgeoning electric two-wheeler market and the critical role battery swapping will play in its evolution. Horace Luke, Gogoro’s founder and CEO, emphasised the importance of establishing a robust swapping infrastructure to support widespread adoption of electric vehicles (EVs). Amit Garg, director of Marketing at HPCL, highlighted Gogoro’s global leadership in battery swapping and its proven platform as a foundation for India’s EV ecosystem.
Gogoro’s battery swapping model has been a resounding success in Taiwan, where it operates more battery swapping stations than gas stations in urban areas. The Gogoro network supports nearly 600,000 riders and manages more than 1.3 million smart batteries, with an impressive track record of nearly 500 million battery swaps to date.
The partnership is poised to significantly contribute to India’s sustainable development goals by providing a clean, efficient, and readily available energy solution for the country’s urban mobility. Both HPCL and Gogoro are committed to developing a broad battery swapping infrastructure that will serve as a cornerstone for a leading EV ecosystem in India.
