Honeywell and Repsol partner to boost renewable fuel production

Honeywell and Repsol have announced a strategic collaboration aimed at advancing the production of renewable fuels and circular materials. The partnership will leverage Honeywell’s cutting-edge technologies to convert waste materials such as fats, oils, greases, biomass, and solids into renewable fuels at Repsol’s refineries. This move aligns with both companies’ commitments to reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable energy solutions.

Honeywell’s technologies, including its Ecofining™ technology, will be scaled and commercialised at Repsol’s facilities to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel. The companies are also exploring the use of Honeywell’s UpCycle Process Technology, which recycles waste plastics into polymer feedstock for new plastics, potentially boosting plastic recycling rates to nearly 90%.

Repsol is a global multi-energy company headquartered in Madrid, Spain. It operates across the entire oil and gas value chain, including exploration, production, refining, and marketing of petroleum products and chemicals. The company also has a strong presence in renewable energy as part of its commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

Repsol owns and operates six refineries—five in Spain and one in Peru—with a combined refining capacity exceeding 1 million barrels per day. The refineries are located in:

• Cartagena, Spain – Known for advanced refining technologies
• A Coruña, Spain – A key site for Repsol’s operations in Spain
• Bilbao, Spain – Also known as the Petronor refinery
• Puertollano, Spain – An integrated complex with petrochemical facilities
• Tarragona, Spain – A significant hub for both refining and chemical production
• La Pampilla, Peru – The only Repsol refinery outside Europe

The collaboration builds on a history of successful partnerships between Honeywell and Repsol, including licensing and developing petrochemical units, digitalization, and technical support. This new venture is expected to enhance Repsol’s capabilities in renewable fuel production as it works toward its goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
