Green Oleo expands biolubricant range with LuSC-listed esters
Green Oleo S.p.A. (GRN:IM), a leading European producer of fine oleochemicals derived from renewable and biodegradable sources, has made significant progress in its biolubricant market strategy.
The company has successfully added 26 renewable esters to the Lubricant Substance Classification List (LuSC-list) under the EU Ecolabel programme and has initiated the process for an additional 18 esters, expected to be formalised by February 2025. This expansion will bring Green Oleo’s total number of approved lubricant base fluids to 44.
Green Oleo’s President and CEO, Beatrice Buzzella, highlighted the importance of this milestone, stating: “This achievement is the result of our continuous R&D efforts in the biolubricant sector. The inclusion of our 44 lubricant bases in the LuSC-list will enable our customers to formulate biolubricants that carry the EU Ecolabel, certifying their reduced environmental impact while maintaining high performance standards.”
The EU Ecolabel, established in 1992, is a European quality mark distinguishing products and services with a lower environmental footprint throughout their lifecycle. The LuSC-list evaluates substances based on biodegradability, bioaccumulation, and aquatic toxicity.
The Lubricant Substance Classification List is managed by Vlaanderen Circulair (Circular Flanders), a public agency under the Federal Public Service (FPS) Health, Food Chain Safety, and Environment of Belgium.
Green Oleo’s newly listed lubricant base fluids include both traditional biolubricant esters and advanced renewable-based esters, such as its GreenFad® RG and GreenFad® GS series. The GreenFad® RG series offers multi-purpose esters valued for their viscosity modification and lubricity, containing more than 80% renewable content. Meanwhile, the GreenFad® GS series is designed for high-performance applications, including food-grade aluminium container release agents.
Green Oleo, based in Cremona, Italy, has been a key player in the oleochemical industry since its establishment in 2012 following the acquisition of Croda Cremona S.r.l. The company’s production facility spans 64,000 square metres and has an annual capacity of 65,000 tonnes.
