PetroVietnam’s Dung Quat Refinery to increase capacity to 7.6 mtpa

The Dung Quat Refinery, located in the Dung Quat Economic Zone, Quang Ngai Province in central Vietnam, has a current crude oil refining capacity of 148 thousand barrels/day or 6.5 million tons per annum. The facility was the first oil refinery established in Vietnam when the initial phase of construction was completed in February 2009.

Binh Son Refining & Petrochemical Co. Ltd. (BSR), a member unit of the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (PetroVietnam), operates the oil refinery which can process 67 varieties of crude oil from around the globe. Products include Mogas A92/A95 and E5/10; Jet A1/Jet A1K fuels; kerosene; diesel; fuel oil; liquefied petroleum gas; propylene; polypropylene resins and sulphur.

On April 22, BSR announced a USD1.2 billion upgrade and expansion of the Dung Quat facility that will boost crude oil processing capacity to 7.6 million tonnes per year. The company indicated that 60% of the funds required for the expansion project will come from loans. BSR intends to raise the proportion of imported crude oil it processes from 21.4% in 2021 to 35-46% following the upgrade. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2025. Production at the Vietnam refinery will remain unchanged in 2022, with a forecast of 6.5 million tonnes.
