Pertamina to collaborate with Toyota on hydrogen-based vehicle ecosystem

Indonesia’s state-owned oil and gas company PT Pertamina (Persero) is undertaking massive projects in renewable energy to drive the energy transition, including developing a hydrogen-based vehicle ecosystem. In this area, Pertamina is collaborating with Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Corp.

Dannif Danusaputro, CEO of PT Pertamina New and Renewable Energy (Pertamina NRE), explained that this development is aimed at exploring the hydrogen business potential in transportation.

“Hydrogen for vehicles is one of the alternative transportation options with clean energy. Pertamina, with Toyota, will develop a passenger car ecosystem based on hydrogen,” said Danusaputro.

He added that Pertamina NRE will collaborate with PT Pertamina Patra Niaga to build the hydrogen refueling infrastructure. Pertamina has the advantage of having support facilities spread across Indonesia, which will be an added value for future new and renewable energy business development.

“In the future, we will establish hydrogen refueling stations that can be used by hydrogen-based vehicles at existing Pertamina facilities, as evidence of Pertamina’s commitment to optimising infrastructure for energy transition acceleration,” he said.

Pertamina has stated its target to achieve net zero emission (NZE) by 2060 by providing environmentally friendly transportation fuel alternatives, said Fadjar Djoko Santoso, VP of Corporate Communication of Pertamina.

The collaboration with Toyota builds on Pertamina’s commitment to achieving net zero.

“Pertamina’s innovations towards NZE 2060 are continuously being implemented, not only in the core business aspect but also in derivative businesses that can be utilised by the public. Thus, the journey towards NZE can be undertaken collectively by all segments of society,” Santoso  said.
