Intertek launches electrification hub in Michigan

Intertek, a global provider of Total Quality Assurance, has inaugurated its Electrification Centre of Excellence in Plymouth, Michigan. Positioned in the heart of the U.S. automotive sector, this facility aims to offer comprehensive quality assurance solutions to auto manufacturers and suppliers, aiding the industry’s shift toward electric transportation.

Intertek CEO, André Lacroix, emphasised the significance of sustainable solutions for vehicles, noting the rapid advancements in battery technologies. “With regulatory support and the growing demand for electric vehicles, Intertek stands as a catalyst for positive transformation in the automotive realm. Our commitment to the Plymouth Electrification Centre of Excellence underscores our dedication to the electrification evolution of the auto sector,” Lacroix said.

Electric vehicle (EV) sales in the U.S. have seen a remarkable 65% growth from 2021 to 2022, with projections indicating sales surpassing one million EVs this year. The Electrification Centre of Excellence is poised to cater to this surge, offering regulatory guidance and testing for emerging EV and electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) battery and charging technologies.

Mike Parker, president of Intertek Transportation Technologies, highlighted the importance of ensuring the safety and efficiency of EVs and related systems. “Our Centre is equipped to offer some of North America’s most comprehensive EV battery and EVSE testing capabilities, serving both automotive OEMs and Tier Suppliers,” said Parker.

The Electrification Centre, spanning 200,000 square feet, stands as one of Intertek’s largest global labs. It boasts state-of-the-art testing facilities, including a 55,000 lbf shaker, battery cycler capabilities up to 1200V/600kw, and 90 environmental chambers suitable for full vehicle testing.
