Ian Marchant, SSE Chief Executive, appointed as new EI President

Ian Marchant FEI, Chief Executive, SSE (formerly Scottish and Southern Energy), has been appointed as the new President of the Energy Institute (EI) at the EI’s AGM.

This role is a voluntary position to be held for the period from June 2013 to summer 2015.

Mr Marchant became Chief Executive, SSE, in 2002, having been Finance Director since 1998. He has worked in the energy industry since 1992, when he joined Southern Electric (which became SSE in 1998). He will be stepping down from the role at SSE at the end of June. Prior to this, he worked at PricewaterhouseCoopers. He is Senior Independent Director at the Aberdeen-based oil and energy company John Wood Group plc, Chairman of the Scotland 2020 Delivery Group, a member of Ofgem’s Environmental Advisory Group and a member of the Energy Research Partnership.

In response to his appointment, Mr Marchant says, ‘I have spent the last 21 years working in the energy industry and have grown to appreciate the skills, knowledge and experience of everyone in the sector, and the key role that energy plays in our modern life. I am delighted to be able to continue this involvement through the Energy Institute, which develops and promotes that knowledge and those skills, as well as good practice for the benefit of the industry and society as a whole.’

He is both pragmatic and creative and will be a great ambassador for the Energy Institute and all it strives to do in developing people and organisations to be the best they can be.
