DSM executives to speak at 10th Annual World Congress on Industrial Biotechnology in Montreal

Advanced biofuels, such as cellulosic bio-ethanol, and bio-based chemicals hold promise in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, while providing locally produced, renewable components.

Royal DSM, the global Life Sciences and Materials Sciences company, announces today that members of the management team of its Bio-based Products & Services organization will speak at the 10th Annual World Congress on Industrial Biotechnology to be conducted in Montreal, Canada, 16-19 June, 2013. The DSM executives will represent the company and also two of its joint ventures, which are involved in the development and production of cellulosic bio-ethanol and bio-succinic acid.

Anton Robek, President Bio-based Products & Services, will provide an overview of DSM’s activities and partnerships in biofuels in a plenary presentation at 8 AM on 19 June.

Oliver May, Vice President R&D Bio-based Products & Services, will represent DSM in a breakout panel session the morning of 17 June regarding Advanced Biofuels and Biorefinery Platforms. The panel will be discussing the topic “Cellulosic Ethanol: Scale-up and Commercialization.”
DSM’s joint ventures, which it uses to deploy its advanced, sustainable technologies, also have a strong presence at BIO. Speakers from these joint ventures include:
Steven M. Hartig, who is with POET-DSM Advanced Biofuels as General Manager in charge of Licensing, will speak as part of a plenary panel discussion on 19 June on the subject “Feeling the Heat of the Biofuels Boom.” This panel is expected to discuss significant policy challenges and mounting political pressure against the industry. Topics also will cover the shift in public opinion on the potential for biofuels as a viable petroleum alternative, cap ex hurdles, regulatory burdens, and how the biofuels industry plans to overcome these obstacles in 2013. POET-DSM Advanced Biofuels is a DSM joint venture with Sioux Falls, South Dakota-based POET.

Will van den Tweel, General Manager of Reverdia, DSM’s joint venture with Roquette Frères of France, will address the topic of “Renewable Succinic Acid: The Road to Commercialization,” in a panel discussion in the Renewable Chemical Platforms and Bio-based Materials track the morning of 17 June. Reverdia’s plant in Italy is the world’s first in its scale and currently is in start-up mode to commercially produce bio-succinic acid.
