Chevron Oronite to present at iFlex Car Wash Show

San Ramon, CA, USA (March 21, 2017) – Two representatives from Chevron Oronite will be giving presentations at The Car Wash Show on April 4-6, 2017, in Las Vegas, NV. The first, which is titled Potential Impact of Self-Driving Cars on Engine Oil Requirements and Fast Lube Business, will be presented by Gary M. Parsons, Global OEM and Industry Liaison Manager, Chevron Oronite, on Tuesday, April 4, 8:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. The second, which is titled Bridging the Gap from GF-5 to GF-6: Preparing for New Industry Standards, will be presented by S. Mahboobeh Hosseini, Research and Development Engineer, Chevron Oronite, on Wednesday, April 5, 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Parsons will present and review aspects of self-driving vehicles and the self-driving vehicle industry that are likely to impact engine oil performance demands and the vehicle service industry. “Numerous original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are already testing autonomous self-driving vehicles and have announced plans to introduce them commercially within the next 3 to 5 years,” said Parsons.

“While exciting in many ways, the introduction of self-driving vehicles has the potential to disrupt many aspects of the transportation industry, including maintenance and service. For example, we may see fewer vehicles operating a greater percentage of time, which could lead to more fleet ownership and a greater emphasis on uptime and durability. And greater vehicle-to-vehicle communication has the potential to create lower stress environments for the cars, which could extend drain intervals. Overall engine oil demand may decrease long term, but higher quality engine oils will be required. To be successful long term, companies have to start planning now.”

Hosseini will present and review how motor oil specifications for gasoline engine oils – which are created to mitigate the concerns of OEMs – are going through a period of unprecedented change in North America.

“ILSAC GF-6, the next global gasoline engine oil specification for vehicles from US and Japanese manufacturers, will be comprised of six newly-developed engine tests that will promote enhanced lubricant performance,” said Hosseini. “While the industry awaits the development of a GF-6 specification, there is a need to upgrade products to meet the second-generation dexos 1™ specification (dexos1:2015) developed to protect General Motor’s new turbocharged gasoline direct injection (GDI) and legacy engine platforms before the expiration of dexos1:2010 licenses on August 31st 2017.”

The Car Wash Show, which is run by the International Carwash Association, the Automotive Oil Change Association, and the Western Carwash Association, brings together the leaders, innovators and decision makers of the professional car wash and fast lube industries.
