Chevron Oronite confirms its support and product readiness for proposed API SN Plus Specification

SAN RAMON, Calif., December 4, 2017 – Chevron Oronite recently announced that it supports the need for API SN Plus – the proposed “supplemental standard” to the API SN specification that seeks to introduce oils for Low Speed Pre-Ignition (LSPI) mitigation – and that the company is ready with product solutions for this new specification. Oronite will follow the industry processes and guidelines required to launch the API SN Plus specification and related products.

“We understand the concerns related to delays in GF-6 and support the need for products with LSPI mitigation as soon as is practically feasible,” said Barbara Smith, vice president of Products and Technology, Oronite. “Oronite has a strong legacy of developing solutions in PCMO applications as demonstrated by our successful ILSAC GF-5 and award-winning and first-to- market dexos1™Gen 2 products. We are well prepared from both a technology and supply chain standpoint to assist our customers with various performance needs as they begin to transition their product lines to meet the API SN Plus and ultimately, GF-6 specifications.”

API SN Plus is a new supplemental standard designation that would appear at the bottom of the API Service Symbol and will not impact ILSAC GF-5 or the API Certification Symbol (“Starburst”). The specification was proposed by ILSAC on July 20, 2017 and reviewed further by the industry at the API LG Standards meeting on August 15, 2017. The exact industry timeline for the implementation of API SN Plus is under development.

“Oronite’s existing product architecture, which provides a connection to our strong ILSAC GF-5 technology platform, will support API SN Plus in both main tier and full synthetic products with widely available coverage in API Group II and Group III base oils across applicable viscosity grades” explained Teri Crosby, global product line manager, Automotive, Oronite. She added that

“Oronite has available solutions that specifically help prevent LSPI, the primary driver for the API SN Plus supplemental standard, and that also help protect the turbocharger components in Turbocharged Gasoline Direct Injection (TGDI) engines.” The turbocharger needs proper lubricants to help protect its parts from the extreme heat and pressure conditions in which it operates.

“Our API SN Plus-ready solutions have been validated in the ASTM Sequence IX (Ford LSPI) test and meet the proposed limits,” explained Crosby. “By leveraging an innovative and proven technology platform, and offering a broad range of logistical benefits and base stock coverage for blending options, Oronite continues to deliver flexibility and value to its customers through our PCFlex ADDvantage™ approach.”
