ASTM Petroleum Committee Presents Award of Merit to Lawrence Wilkinson
W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., July 1, 2014—ASTM International Committee D02 on Petroleum Products, Liquid Fuels and Lubricants has recognized Lawrence Wilkinson, chemist at ExxonMobil Refining & Supply Co. in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, with the 2014 ASTM Award Award of Merit. The Award of Merit and its accompanying title of fellow is ASTM’s highest organizational recognition for individual contributions to standards activities.
Committee D02 cited Wilkinson for his respected technical expertise and dedicated leadership in maintaining standards within a number of D02 subcommittees. He chairs Subcommittee D02.04 on Hydrocarbon Analysis as well as that group’s Editorial section (D02.040E) and is secretary of D02.10 on Properties of Petroleum Waxes and Alternative Wax-Like Materials. He has been recognized with the D02 Award of Excellence on three occasions.
Wilkinson joined ExxonMobil (then Exxon) in 1990 as special lab technician and was promoted to chemist in the Baton Rouge Refinery Quality Assurance Laboratory in 1993. He serves as the lab’s hazard communication contact and as the management of change sponsor for changes involving the use of new chemicals. Prior to Exxon, Wilkinson was a high school chemistry and physics teacher in West Virginia and Louisiana. He holds a bachelor’s in secondary education – chemistry and physical science and a master’s in curriculum and instruction from West Virginia University.
Outside ASTM, Wilkinson is a member of the American Chemical Society (ACS) and a past chair of the ACS Baton Rouge Section, and a member of the Louisiana Science Teachers Association (LSTA) and the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA). He received the LSTA Distinguished Informal Science Education Award and the ACS/AIChE Baton Rouge Charles E. Coates Award in 2013.
