ASTM Gaseous Fuels committee at work on proposed standard for analysis of Hydrogen Fuel Quality

W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Penn., — A proposed new ASTM International standard, ASTM WK34574, Test Methods for Determination of Organic Halides, Total Non-Methane Hydrocarbons and Formaldehyde in Hydrogen Fuel by Gas Chromatography (GC) and Mass Spectrometry (MS), will be used to monitor the quality of hydrogen fuel for fuel cell vehicles. WK34574 is being developed by Subcommittee D03.14 on Hydrogen and Fuel Cells, part of ASTM International Committee D03 on Gaseous Fuels.

The procedure in ASTM WK34574 will be used by laboratories to analyze hydrogen fuel quality for fuel cell vehicles to satisfy the requirements of SAE J2719, Hydrogen Fuel Quality for Fuel Cell Vehicles. The proposed test method will allow users to monitor formaldehyde and each hydrocarbon compound at one part per billion.

All interested parties are invited to join in the standards developing activities of Committee D03. ASTM International welcomes participation in the development of its standards. For more information on becoming an ASTM member, visit www.astm.org/JOIN.

ASTM International is one of the largest international standards development and delivery systems in the world. ASTM International meets the World Trade Organization (WTO) principles for the development of international standards: coherence, consensus, development dimension, effectiveness, impartiality, openness, relevance and transparency. ASTM standards are accepted and used in research and development, product testing, quality systems and commercial transactions.
