Satoshi Hirano, with a remarkable career at Toyota Motor Corporation since 2007, has significantly contributed to engine lubricant development and research. His prior experience at Chevron Oronite and active role as a spokesperson for JAMA at ILSAC and ACEA meetings have been pivotal. Hirano-san’s groundbreaking work in understanding the relationship between new engine hardware and engine oils has been instrumental in developing industry standards. His research on Low-Speed Pre-Ignition (LSPI) in direct injection engines led to the ASTM Sequence IX LSPI test, now part of API SN Plus and the ILSAC GF-6 specification. Additionally, his efforts in developing the Sequence IVB valve train wear test and the Toyota Turbo test have been crucial for future ACEA categories. Hirano-san’s dedication to fuel economy data on SAE 0W-20 played a key role in its EPA approval for ILSAC GF-5. Celebrating 25 years in the industry, he is currently the project manager at Toyota Motor Corp.’s Engine Function Design Dept.

Its ability to handle high temperatures and ensure system longevity, while protecting against corrosion and wear, makes it a groundbreaking development in the industry. Thierry Gourault, Vice President of Automotive Lubricants at Total, accepted the award, highlighting Total’s commitment to supporting the evolution of electric and hybrid vehicles.
