ExxonMobil and UNICOM advance data centre cooling innovation
ExxonMobil and UNICOM Engineering have partnered to advance data centre immersion cooling solutions, addressing the growing energy demand in the data centre industry. The collaboration, formalised through a memorandum of understanding (MOU), brings together ExxonMobil’s expertise in fluid molecular design and UNICOM’s strengths in information technology (IT) hardware and systems integration.
The partnership will focus on the development of ExxonMobil’s data centre immersion fluids, engineered to enhance energy efficiency and reduce operational costs. Initial tests will be conducted using UNICOM’s liquid cooling immersion-ready servers, designed to handle the industry’s most demanding applications.
Glen Sharkowicz, market development manager at ExxonMobil, noted, “The booming growth in AI is driving the demand for computing power and the energy and cooling required to support the growth of the industry. The most advanced CPUs and GPUs are taxing existing cooling technologies in data centres driving the need for innovation and collaboration across the value chain. This collaboration with Unicom Engineering will help us unlock the potential of immersion cooling to improve data centre efficiency and reliability. With the rising demand for greater computing power, this joint effort will allow us to deliver cooling solutions that meet the evolving needs of the data center industry.”
Rusty Cone, general manager at UNICOM Engineering, echoed the sentiment, emphasising the environmental benefits of the initiative. “This new initiative represents an important step in advancing our technology offerings to address the changing needs of the data center industry. By joining our efforts with ExxonMobil’s innovative fluid technologies, we will be able to introduce advanced cooling solutions that promote greater efficiency and reduce environmental impact.”
This partnership is expected to set new industry standards for immersion cooling while supporting the shift towards sustainable and energy-efficient data centres. ExxonMobil and UNICOM’s combined expertise promises to deliver innovative solutions for the evolving data centre landscape.
