ALIA Webinar: Gas Engine’s Lubrication Challenges

In this ALIA webinar, the increased thermal stresses of gas combustion will be discussed and on how this leads to various concerns about the operation of the engine and performance of the lubricant. We will look at how a gas engine oil’s life can be optimised through a combination of formulation technologies and oil analysis data, as well as discuss on how the rise of alternate gas sources (bio- and landfill- gas) is further challenging oil drain intervals. Finally we will speculate on the future opportunities for the lubricants industry with regard to gas combustion engines.

Speaker’s bio:

Rafe Britton is a mechanical engineer with twelve years oil industry experience, most recently as ExxonMobil Engineering Services Manager for Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. Rafe’s passion for lubrication technology extends to industry advocacy and the belief that most businesses underestimate the value of lubricants because the technology is not well understood. With this in mind he started the Lubrication Explained YouTube channel; a vehicle for explaining lubrication to end-users and casual consumers. Rafe currently works as a Technical Consultant, assisting industrial companies with lubrication issues and helping lubricant manufacturers translate their product benefits into relatable messages.

Prior to working in lubricants, Rafe worked as a Senior Drilling Engineer within ExxonMobil Development Company, designing, planning and executing high complexity big-bore gas wells in the highlands of Papua New Guinea (PNG-LNG) as well as deepwater environments in offshore Western Australia (Gorgon-Jansz). During this time he also coordinated rig construction projects in Singapore after getting his start on the offshore Bass Strait oil platforms. Rafe holds a Bachelor of Aerospace Engineering and a Bachelor of Science from University of New South Wales, Australia.
