Early licensing applications for ILSAC GF-7 standards open

The American Petroleum Institute (API) has announced early application procedures for products meeting the new ILSAC GF-7 standards, a milestone for the automotive lubrication industry.

Starting 13 January 2025, marketers can begin submitting formulations that comply with these updated standards, with licensing to officially commence on 31 March 2025.

Products meeting ILSAC GF-7A will be licensed to display the API Certification Mark “Starburst,” while those meeting ILSAC GF-7B will carry the “Shield” mark. Additionally, oils qualifying for API Service SQ will feature the designation on the upper portion of the API Service Symbol “Donut,” with Resource Conserving oils gaining an additional label in the lower portion.

Key points for marketers

  • Early submissions can now be entered via API’s online application system, allowing marketers to prepare their formulations ahead of the licensing date.
  • Existing API SP products with matching viscosity grades can leverage the new system’s streamlined capabilities to reduce duplication in submissions.
  • Formulations meeting the ILSAC GF-7 standards may be shared between companies under strict conditions.

From 31 March 2025 to 31 March 2026, marketers can continue to license products under the ILSAC GF-6 standards alongside the GF-7 standards, ensuring a seamless transition. However, marketers are reminded not to imply API certification before the licensing start date or use certification marks prematurely.

API’s updates align with industry demands for advanced engine oils that meet stringent environmental and performance requirements. For further details, marketers are encouraged to contact the API Lubricants Standards Group.
