DuPont MOLYKOTE HP-300 Grease meets hydrogen purity standards

DuPont has announced that its MOLYKOTE® HP-300 Grease has successfully passed stringent hydrogen purity tests in accordance with ISO 14687:2019 standards.

ISO 14687:2019 is an international standard that specifies the quality requirements for hydrogen fuel used in various applications. The standard ensures that hydrogen meets strict purity levels to protect sensitive systems and equipment, particularly in fuel cell technologies, where impurities can compromise performance, safety, and longevity.

This breakthrough positions the lubricant as a game-changing solution for hydrogen technologies, particularly in critical applications like fuel cell stacks.

Working with HyCentA Research GmbH, DuPont developed an innovative testing protocol, exposing the grease to hydrogen at 700 bar over several weeks. Post-exposure analysis confirmed that MOLYKOTE® HP-300 did not significantly contaminate hydrogen. This ensures compatibility with hydrogen systems where even trace impurities—down to 4 parts per billion—can compromise safety and performance.

MOLYKOTE® HP-300 Grease is designed for hydrogen-exposed components, such as seals and threaded connections, helping to reduce contamination risks and maintain system integrity. Its standout features include:

  • Low-temperature performance down to -40°C, crucial for hydrogen refuelling applications.
  • Compatibility with a wide range of substrates, including most elastomers and plastics.
  • Resistance to hydrogen embrittlement and chemical exposure, supporting safe hydrogen storage and transport.

This achievement supports the advancement of cleaner energy solutions, as hydrogen becomes a cornerstone of next-generation sustainable fuels.
