Dubai Municipality signs sustainable jet fuel deal with global firms

Dubai Municipality announced on February 13th a partnership with N.V.Besix S.A., Marubeni and ENOC Marketing to produce sustainable aircraft fuel (SAF) from municipal waste streams.

The partners signed a memorandum of understanding at the World Government Summit, held from February 12-14 in Dubai, underlining UAE sustainability commitments like net zero emissions by 2050. The project targets commercial startup by July 2025, supplying over 1% of national airline fuel demand with SAF by 2031.

“This groundbreaking collaboration advances objectives around carbon removal and establishing regional low-carbon fuel leadership,” said Dawoud Al Hajri, Dubai Municipality Director General.

The initiative will integrate technologies turning solid waste, sewage and green hydrogen into jet biofuel. It exemplifies innovative strategies tackling climate change through the circular economy, resource conservation and emissions cuts, Al Hajri explained.

ENOC CEO Saif Al Falasi added that SAF is critical for drastically reducing aviation’s carbon footprint. “We recognize its pivotal role and will continue progressing solutions under the UAE’s net zero strategy,” he said.

The UAE partnership model brings together specialized expertise across the value chain to pioneer environmental progress at scale. Dubai Municipality undertakes supplying feedstock streams like organic waste from its operations.
