Daimler Truck opens Battery Technology Centre in Mannheim

Daimler Truck has officially inaugurated its state-of-the-art Battery Technology Center (BTC) at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Mannheim, Germany. This new facility marks a significant milestone in the company’s ongoing efforts to advance electric vehicle (EV) technology and sustainable transportation solutions.

The BTC, spanning more than 10,000 square metres, combines development and production capabilities under one roof. This centre is equipped with advanced machinery for the prototypical production of battery cells and systems, allowing Daimler Truck to build comprehensive knowledge of battery technology in-house.

The facility includes a pilot line for battery cells, which helps develop process knowledge and test various cell chemistries. Additionally, a pilot line for battery packs will prepare the site for future series production, set to commence in the second half of the decade with the next generation of lithium-ion batteries.

Strategic importance

Andreas Gorbach, member of the Board of Management of Daimler Truck, emphasised the BTC’s role in the company’s electrification strategy: “The opening of our Battery Technology Centre is an important step in electrifying our product portfolio and a milestone in the history of innovation at the Mannheim plant. We aim to keep vital added value in-house and strengthen our presence in Europe.”

The inauguration ceremony was attended by key figures, including Michael Kleiner, director-general at the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labour and Tourism of Baden-Württemberg, and the Mayor of Mannheim, Christian Specht. They highlighted the centre’s contribution to the region’s status as a leader in advanced battery technology.

The BTC building features eco-friendly design elements, including 400 square metres of greenery on its façade, a green roof, and photovoltaic systems capable of powering around 50 homes. This aligns with Daimler Truck’s commitment to sustainability and reducing its carbon footprint.
