CHERY signs framework agreement for strategic cooperation with CATL
Chinese automaker CHERY Group has signed a strategic cooperation framework agreement with Chinese battery manufacturer Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL), the world’s largest.
In addition to the battery supply and technical cooperation of passenger vehicles, CHERY and CATL will also conduct joint exploration in the areas of mass transit, EIC technology integration of new energy and battery swap service in the fields of buses, logistics vehicles, heavy trucks, and electric ships.
CATL, which focuses on research, development, production and sales of power battery system and energy storage systems for new energy vehicles (NEVs), has been providing power batteries to foreign automakers including Mercedes Benz, BMW and Tesla.
CHERY has been conducting research and development of new energy technology since 1999. To date, CHERY has applied for more than 900 patents in the field of new energy and obtained more than 600 patents, ranking first among Chinese automobile enterprises, and third globally.
The state-owned automaker, which is based in Wuhu, Anhui Province, China, has developed the “457” technology development plan in terms of future technology planning: four vehicle powertrain platforms, five general subsystems and seven core technologies, covering SUVs from Class A to Class D with pure electric, hybrid electric, extended-range electric, fuel-cell and other new energy technologies.
CHERY has also successfully developed the world’s first fully-functional hybrid Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT), with the unique advantage of having three engines, three gears, nine working modes and 11 speed ratios. By definition, DHT uses at least two sources of propulsion: an internal combustion engine and at least one e-machine. DHTs can offer several modes, for example, serial, parallel, all-electric and ICE modes.
By joining hands with CATL, CHERY says it will “usher in a new powerful combination and coordinated development.”
CHERY says it will work together with partners to promote the sustainable development of the new energy industry and the popularization of electric vehicles, to help facilitate the goal of “carbon peaking and carbon neutrality.”
