The top three product segments of the global surface disinfectant market
are discussed below:

Global hypochlorite disinfectant market

Hypochlorite disinfectant accounted for 26% of the market share, which
is the largest, in 2016. Hypochlorite is widely used as a disinfectant.
Chemically, hypochlorite contains atoms of oxygen and chlorine. It
reacts with various ions like sodium and calcium to form sodium
hypochlorite (NaClO) and calcium hypochlorite (Ca(ClO)2).

According to Kurva Samba Sivudu, a lead specialty
chemicals
research analyst from Technavio, “Hypochlorite
disinfectant is used as a bleaching agent to clean floors and walls.
Sodium hypochlorite is used as a bleaching agent in textiles, laundry,
and detergents. About 10% of sodium hypochlorite solution is used as a
bleaching agent and disinfectant in healthcare facilities, public
facilities, and household. There is an increasing demand for
hypochlorite due to its availability in various forms like sodium
hypochlorite and calcium hypochlorite.”

Global quaternary ammonium compounds disinfectant market

Quaternary ammonium compounds are used as surface disinfectants. Though
their ability to disinfect is lower than that of hypochlorite, they
effectively kill the virus causing influenza. Generally, they exhibit
low toxicity; however, they cause dermatitis and nasal irritation, which
lasts longer, when they come in contact with the skin and nose,
respectively.

“Quaternary ammonium compounds are widely used by hospitals to clean
items that are necessary for non-critical patients, and common surfaces.
They are used in the food industry and hydraulic fracking, owing to
their anti-microbial properties. These disinfectants are used for
regular cleaning of floors in homes and offices. Although they are
ineffective against viruses and Mycobacterium tuberculosis, they are
more effective in disinfecting micro-organisms on surfaces that are
cleaned,” says Kurva.

Global hydrogen peroxide disinfectant market

Hydrogen peroxide is sometimes used as an antiseptic for cleaning
wounds. It is a colorless liquid at room temperature. It is a weak acid
and exhibits strong oxidizing properties; therefore, it is used as a
bleaching agent. It is mainly used in the purification of water.
Hydrogen peroxide is used as an antimicrobial agent to clean surfaces
such as floors, walls, couches, countertops, and windows.

Hydrogen peroxide is a stable compound, and its shelf life is two years.
Highly resistant to the virus that is responsible for influenza, and
norovirus. Hillyard Suprox-D is an environmental protection agency
(EPA)-registered hydrogen peroxide disinfectant that claims to kill
HIV-1 virus in a minute.

The top vendors highlighted by Technavio’s research analysts in this
