Renesas Electronics America Highlights Secure Smart Energy Solutions at Grid Edge World Forum 2017

Explore Renesas’ High-Performance Processing, Accuracy,

SANTA CLARA, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–#Renesas–Renesas Electronics America Inc., a premier supplier of advanced
semiconductor solutions, today announced it will demonstrate smart
energy solutions that enable the next generation of Internet of Things
(IoT) applications at Grid
Edge World Forum, June 27-29, at the San Jose Convention Center in
San Jose, Calif. At booth #502, Renesas will demonstrate microcontroller
(MCU)-based designs for high-performance embedded control processing,
accurate metering, multi-standard connectivity, and reliable security,
which support embedded designers from their application concept to
innovative smart energy solutions.

As devices become interconnected and processing capabilities move out to
the edge, smart meter and other energy equipment manufacturers require
more comprehensive design resources, from development platforms to
reference designs to fully working prototypes. At Grid Edge World Forum,
Renesas is sharing its embedded design expertise and perspectives on the
smart grid. Renesas will showcase solutions from the distribution
automation network to the grid edge, and will also explore emerging
technologies for low-voltage grid architectures in the control center
and in the field with other smart grid experts during the conference
sessions.

Panel Discussion

Peter Knazko, Segment Manager, Smart Grid & Metrology, Renesas
Electronics America, will join smart grid and technology experts from
Whisker Labs, Blue Pillar, and Green Tech Media Research to discuss how
smart grid product manufacturers can achieve innovative designs in the
panel “The Plug & Play Grid: Realizing the Full Opportunity of the
Internet of Things.”

Technology Demonstrations

At booth #502, Renesas Electronics America will showcase several
innovative smart energy solutions that address three key elements of
designing for the grid edge:

High-Performance Processing

Metrology is the science of measurement, and Renesas has designed into
its evaluation systems accuracies of better than +/- 0.1 percent and a
dynamic range of over 6600:1, with the possibility to use either
shunt-based sensing, or the more traditional current-transformer based
methods.

At the Grid Edge World Forum, Renesas will demonstrate its low-power
RL78/I1C microcontroller (MCU)-based solutions with high security
functionality that enable smart meter manufacturers to create,
customize, and bring to market high-precision smart meters that drive
innovation at the grid edge.

Connectivity

Renesas, a founding member of the Wi-SUN
Alliance, will also demonstrate reliable smart meter connectivity
for the smart grid based on its RAA604S Sub-GHz RF front-end device and
RL78/G1H integrated RF transceiver chip.

Security

Protection of high-precision data is mission critical for systems and
connectivity standards, and there are multiple levels of security from
which to choose. Renesas will showcase its secure cloud-connected power
solution for power meters with technology from Intrinsic ID and Medium
One. The demonstrations will highlight the use of Intrinsic ID’s SRAM
PUF (Physical Unclonable Function) authentication technology inside
Renesas’ RX231 MCU that prevents unauthorized access to the Renesas
IoT Sandbox cloud site and manipulation of smart meter sensing data,
providing peace of mind for metering manufacturers who want to bring
their next-generation devices online.
