PPG Showcases Emerging Paint, Coatings Technology Developments for Electric Vehicle Batteries, Autonomous Vehicles at NAIAS
Expanded automotive coatings portfolio helps enhance battery
performance, increases visibility for autonomous driving systems
PITTSBURGH–(BUSINESS WIRE)–PPG (NYSE: PPG) today announced that it will showcase developments for
its expanded portfolio of paints and coatings solutions for battery
electric, hybrid electric and autonomous vehicles this month at the 2018
North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) at the Cobo Center in
Detroit.
New technologies PPG will highlight at the show include:
-
PPG IOCRON™ cathode binder – This new cathode battery binder is
a cost-effective product that eliminates harmful N-Methylpyrrolidone
(NMP) in the standard cathode coating process while maintaining
battery performance. The PPG Iocron binder will improve
formulation and application processes, significantly lower mixing
times, and provide equal or improved cell performance. -
Autonomous vehicle sensor coatings – PPG is pioneering the
development of paints and related coatings that will improve vehicle
and infrastructure visibility to radar and light detection and ranging
(LIDAR) sensors used in autonomous driving systems. The company has
designed coatings with enhanced dark color vehicle detection that
allow the light to penetrate to a reflective underlayer. The signal
bounces off this layer and returns to the sensor instead of being
absorbed. This coating leverages commercially proven technology from
PPG’s aerospace business that functions in the same light- and
heat-reflective way.
PPG also will display its CORE Relation color collection for 2021
vehicle models at NAIAS. The collection comprises four color stories
that represent the latest global consumer trends and preferences. (EDITOR’S
