Navigant Research Study Reveals Global Spending on Non-Wires Alternatives is Expected to Reach $580 Million in 2026
Technology offers a new approach to traditional utility
infrastructure upgrades, report finds
BOULDER, Colo.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–#Energy–A new report from Navigant
Research analyzes the global market for non-wires alternatives
(NWAs), with a focus on market drivers, barriers, business models, and
forecasts for non-traditional transmission and distribution (T&D)
solutions.
When aging equipment or increased load demand calls for upgrades to T&D
infrastructure, most system operators embark on traditional poles and
wires projects. However, emerging NWA technologies now offer utilities a
creative way to address infrastructure needs at a lower cost and with
greater customer and environmental benefits. Click
to tweet: According to a new report from @NavigantRSRCH,
global NWA spending is expected to grow from $63 million in 2017 to $580
million in 2026.
“Traditionally, the solution to equipment replacement would simply mean
poles and wires projects that could earn a regulated rate of return,”
says Brett Feldman, principal research analyst at Navigant Research.
“However, grid management and distributed energy resources (DER)
technologies have improved, utilities are looking to engage customers
more and provide more value-added services, and policy concerns related
to cost and the environment have grown, encouraging adoption of NWAs.”
So far, NWA adoption has been focused in North America, as European and
other system operators tend to approach grid management more
holistically by addressing needs at a system level. Going forward,
though, NWAs are expected to proliferate in all regions due to varying
market conditions and an increase in utility willingness to try new
means of infrastructure replacement.
The report, Non-Wires
Alternatives, examines the global NWA market, with a focus on
market drivers and barriers, business models, and forecasts for
non-traditional T&D solutions. The study provides an analysis of the
trends related to NWAs to highlight varying regional activities and
programs. Global market forecasts for spending, broken out by segment
and region, extend through 2026. The report also analyzes the key
procurement business models related to NWAs and provides case studies of
recent NWA projects in the United States. An Executive Summary of the
report is available for free download on the Navigant
