, the Manufacturers Association for Plastics Processors. For the
MAPP Innovation Award 2017, Intertech Medical won first place, while
Wisconsin Plastics, Inc. tied for third. In the MAPP HR Best Practices
Award 2017, Nicolet Plastics, Inc. earned second place, while Harmony
Systems & Service tied for third.

MAPP Innovation Award 2017

Intertech
Medical
, an affiliate of Intertech Plastics located in Denver,
Colorado, earned first place in the MAPP Innovation Award 2017 for its
zero-defect solution, which identifies defective parts and automatically
scraps start-up rejects. The company’s machine-side, automated work-cell
utilizes integrated process control and quality control on behalf a
customer. Handling more than 3 million parts per year, it delivered a
return on investment (ROI) within 8.4 months in hard cost savings alone.
Additionally, the solution has driven customer satisfaction while
eliminating the burden on Intertech Medical’s quality department, which
previously had to perform additional manual inspections.

Wisconsin
Plastics, Inc.
, based in Green Bay, WI, tied for third place in the
MAPP Innovation Award 2017 for combining a new Universal Robot with a
standard machine robot to pick, place, and pad print parts as part of
the company’s human assembly line. The “cobot” has enabled the company
to increase the throughput for the assembly line by 25% while removing
three assemblers per shift from the overall process. The assemblers have
been reassigned elsewhere, enabling Wisconsin Plastics to run another
complete assembly line.

MAPP HR Best Practices Award 2017

Nicolet
Plastics, Inc.
, headquartered in Mountain, Wisconsin, earned second
place in the MAPP HR Best Practices Award 2017 for the company’s
employee onboarding program. The company’s goal in 2017 was to onboard a
production operator within 60 days. As of June 30, 2017, only 4% of
production operators extended their onboarding training beyond 60 days.
Additionally, the percentage of new hires leaving within 90 days has
declined by more than half, from 33% in 2016 to 14% in 2017.

Harmony
Systems & Service, Inc.
, located in Piqua, OH, tied for third
place in the MAPP HR Best Practices Award 2017 for the company’s
employee retention strategy. The company focuses on hiring individuals
for their attitude, including people with disabilities through RT
Industries, and then providing training with support from an onsite job
coach. All 10 RT employees have been converted from temporary status to
the full-time payroll, with a retention rate of 760-plus days versus 436
days for other full-time employees.
