Energy Cost Savings from Rooftop Solar at Sheppard AFB Homes Enable Community, Home Enhancements

SHEPPARD AFB, Texas–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Balfour
Beatty Communities, a leading provider of property management,
development and related real estate services for the multifamily,
military and student housing markets, today announced first year energy
cost savings resulting from the rooftop solar program implemented at
Sheppard AFB Homes have totaled more than $30k. Sheppard AFB Homes is a
Balfour Beatty Communities owned and managed housing community serving
active duty Air Force families at Sheppard AFB in Texas.

Photovoltaic panels were installed on rooftops throughout the Sheppard
AFB Homes community, with a total system capacity of 1.1 megawatts, as
part of the solar program. The system contributes more than 30 percent
of the community’s total annual power needs and, since reaching full
operational status in July 2016, has exceeded energy savings
expectations. The system’s installation required no out-of-pocket cost
for the Air Force, and protects the on-base housing community from
fluctuating power costs and the need to rely on local electrical utility
providers.

Balfour Beatty Communities has taken the savings realized to date in the
rooftop solar program and reinvested them into community improvements at
Sheppard AFB Homes that directly benefit the Air Force families living
there. These improvements have included roofing and HVAC upgrades and
recreational area enhancements.

of their military communities across the country, including Army, Navy
and Air Force installations. Total system capacity currently exceeds 40
megawatts.
