ComEd, Nicor Gas Tap Whisker Labs for Residential Energy Efficiency Pilot Program

Illinois’ largest electric and natural gas utilities leveraging
Whisker Labs’ Connected Savings to offer incremental energy savings to
customers with Honeywell connected thermostats

OAKLAND, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Whisker
Labs, which is bringing next generation home energy intelligence
technologies to market, today announced that ComEd and Nicor Gas have
tapped Whisker Labs’ Connected
Savings℠ service for a residential smart thermostat pilot program
designed to help customers reduce energy costs associated with cooling
and heating their homes.

Whisker Labs Connected Savings delivers unprecedented energy
intelligence to consumers through the integration of IoT-connected smart
home devices, proprietary weather data, and its patented and predictive
algorithms. This pilot program will utilize Connected Savings to reduce
energy consumption through thermostat optimization and engagement.
Specifically, the program seeks to enroll 3,000 ComEd / Nicor Gas
customers who already have a Honeywell Wi-Fi thermostat installed in
their home. A portion of the customers enrolled in the pilot program
will engage Whisker Labs’ innovative thermostat
optimization service that has demonstrated energy savings above and
beyond the average energy savings typically delivered by connected
thermostats on their own.

Navigant has been selected as the evaluator to measure and verify the
incremental savings from this pilot program. The pilot objective is to
learn how connected thermostats can be improved with advanced analytics
and to use the data from this pilot to submit this technology for
inclusion in the Illinois TRM, which will enable any regulated utility
within Illinois to claim savings that result from the thermostat
optimization solution.

Key Connected Savings features include:

• Thermodynamic modeling – Connected Savings combines its
  proprietary, hyper-local weather and energy usage data to correlate
  usage to the weather, and then utilizes patented algorithms to create
  a detailed and precise thermodynamic model for each individual home to
  understand how a home will respond to changes in the weather on any
  particular day. With this model, custom cooling and heating schedules
  are developed and sent to the thermostat to maximize energy
  efficiency, while maintaining homeowner comfort.

• Homeowner engagement via actionable insights – Using
  information from the thermodynamic model, the platform also provides
  homeowners with personalized insights detailing home efficiency down
  to the equipment level, along with tips for improving efficiency and
  boosting energy savings.
